Our History

GHT celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015. GHT President Paul O’Brien credits the firm’s longevity to a focus on relationships and innovation. “We are incredibly grateful to the staff, clients, and industry colleagues who helped us reach this milestone,” he said. “These relationships are the foundation of GHT’s longevity. Together, we have collaborated on many complex projects that inspired us to develop new solutions to MEP challenges and build a reputation for innovative work.”

GHT was launched by Goodwin “Goodie” Hunt Taylor in 1965. The young entrepreneur grew the company to more than 20 employees in its first decade. In the years following, the firm’s leaders have guided the firm through several recessions and maintained GHT’s status as one of the largest locally owned and headquartered MEP firms in the DC area, in contrast to the recent trend of mergers & acquisitions in the building industry.

Today, GHT’s 90+ staff members are working on some of the largest, most high profile projects in the DC metro area.

A Drive to Innovate

GHT is different from other MEP consultants because of our drive to innovate. We consistently discover new solutions in architectural engineering by applying creative thinking to proven design strategies, with a focus on practical results. GHT’s informed approach will help you develop, design, build, and operate successful buildings.

Some of our most recent success stories include designing a system that creates electricity via natural gas-powered fuel cells and generators; identifying millions of dollars in operational savings opportunities for our clients; and supporting the first project in the world to achieve WELL Platinum and LEED Platinum certification.

Enhancing collaboration. GHT is utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology on base building and interior projects totaling nearly 8,000,000 SF of space. The use of BIM enhances collaboration among design team members and between disciplines. GHT has been using an Autodesk® BIM product – Revit® MEP – since its inception to continue our history of remaining on the leading edge of technology.

The firm’s approach to training is a key component of our successful utilization of BIM. GHT has launched an immersive program that allows our engineers to hone their skills on simulated projects before being assigned to active projects. Engineers from each discipline collaborate to design the simulated project from start to finish, ensuring a holistic BIM education for our staff.
