7News DC (WJLA) in Arlington, Virginia is looking for an experienced, dynamic and forward-thinking digital news leader to drive in-depth and impactful news coverage across Virginia, Maryland and D.C. The successful candidate will oversee digital strategy and execution for our multiplatform content center aimed at growing audience and engagement across all platforms.
As the Digital Executive Producer, you will collaborate closely with senior news management, content creators, and the corporate digital team to build out accurate, balanced and compelling daily news coverage that amplifies our "7 News" brand. We're looking for a hands-on leader driven to make our site, app and social and streaming platforms the best in the market.
Key Responsibilities:
- Know and understand the news so you can effectively contribute to editorial decision-making, curate the homepage, manage publishing workflows, and ensure content aligns with the 7News On Your Side brand and station content focuses.
- Grow and engage our social media audience by coordinating with anchors, reporters, field crews and other content creators to build stories and drive audience interaction throughout the day.
- Analyze social and digital metrics daily (Google Analytics, Sprout, YouTube, etc.) to optimize content strategy, enhance SEO and increase web traffic with a focus on growing YouTube views and subscribers.
- Coach, train and manage content creators — including multiplatform content producers, reporters, anchors and newsroom contributors on best practices for web publishing, SEO, social media and audience development.
- Ability to shoot & edit social-first content and coach/encourage team members to do the same.
- Develop and execute strategic plans around breaking news, major events and enterprise storytelling.
- Collaborate with other departments, including marketing and sales to align on strategy for cross-promotional campaigns.
- Identify and leverage viral, shareable content to boost audience reach.
- Bring a positive attitude, take a collaborative, solution-oriented approach to the work. And be eager to mentor and coach the next generation of multiplatform storytellers.
- Must be flexible with schedule. This is not a 9-5/M-F job, news can break at any time.
Experience Needed:
- 5 to 7 years of experience creating and managing digital news content, with 2 to 3 years in a leadership or management role.
- Strong writing skills for digital platforms and a keen understanding of the differences between writing for the website and app, versus social media platforms and YouTube.
- Deep knowledge of analytics and social listening tools. Familiarity with CMS systems, iNews, Tagboard, and other tools to help with news gathering is preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills are needed.
- Ability to lead a team during breaking news situations and make rapid editorial decisions.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field required.
