Job Description:

The Public Safety Officer (Safety/Security Officer III) plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of VHC Health’s facilities, property, and community. Through proactive patrols, they maintain order, safeguard personnel, and prevent incidents such as fire, theft, vandalism, or unauthorized entry. Officers enforce VHC Health policies, assist patients, visitors, and employees, and respond to security-related needs across the campus. Additionally, they handle complaints of misconduct, prepare incident reports and activity logs, and respond to emergency alerts and situations as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medical Response: Officers must complete advanced first aid training, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification. Upon training, they respond to medical emergencies to assess, stabilize, and facilitate transport or personally transport individuals to the Emergency Department as required.
  • Security and Protective Measures: Trained and authorized officers are equipped to handle situations involving acts of violence, which may require elevated security responses, including the use of physical force or defensive tools, up to and including deadly force. Non-clinical restraint devices, such as handcuffs, may also be utilized.
  • Physical Preparedness: Officers must maintain a high level of physical fitness and be capable of standing or walking for up to 12 hours per shift. They must respond rapidly and appropriately to emergencies, use physical force if necessary to protect themselves or others, and detain individuals for arrest.

Equipment and Appearance:
Officers are required to wear designated uniforms and protective gear, including ballistic vests weighing over 10 pounds, body-worn cameras, and other duty-related equipment.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate's degree is preferred

 

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of VHC Safety/Security Officer II experience; or
  • Two (2) years of unarmed Security Officer experience and 1 year of armed Security Officer or Law Enforcement Officer experience (VHC and outside experience can be combined)

 

Certification/Licensure:

  • Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED required.
  • Virginia DCJS Unarmed Security Officer License to be obtained within six months.
  • Taser CEW, Expandable Baton, Handcuffing, and Defensive Tactics certifications to be obtained within six months.
  • Valid state driver's license and a clean driving record with constant insurability is required.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), National Registry - Paramedic, or equivalent experience is preferred.

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Equivalent Clinical Technician or Emergency Medical Responder experience is preferred.
