Position Summary

This individual will provide operational leadership, oversight, and strategic planning for the George Washington Heart and Vascular Institute and the Cheney Institute. The Executive Director (ED) will work directly with the Institute leadership, the University, and MFA representatives to advance the mission of the Institute through research, education, community outreach, and strategic partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work with the Institute Director, and Board of Directors to develop, promote, and monitor the Institute’s programs.
  • Update and maintain the Institute’s website to reflect ongoing activities and initiatives.
  • Assist the Institute Board of Directors in executing their governance and strategic
  • Identify, develop, and oversee research programs, educational activities, and community service opportunities in collaboration with Institute leadership.
  • Administer applications, budgets, and procedures for Institute-sponsored research.
  • Oversee financial operations, including income tracking, expense monitoring, and annual budget development, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Manage budget allocations for staff support, educational programs, community outreach projects, and research funding.
  • Build and coordinate strategic partnerships within the healthcare and business communities to promote awareness and engagement.
  • Support GW physicians and scientists in the development and execution of Institute-sponsored initiatives.
  • Lead marketing and branding efforts to enhance the visibility and reputation of the Institute.
  • Spearhead fundraising efforts in collaboration with the University Medical Center Development office, focusing on philanthropic contributions and donor engagement.
  • Oversee community outreach programs to increase public awareness of cardiovascular health and access to care.
  • Develop continuing education programs and professional development opportunities for healthcare providers.
  • Identify and pursue new research collaborations and funding opportunities to expand the Institute’s impact.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field of study, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of demonstrated operational experience in a leadership capacity, preferably in an academic medical or healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements 

  • Sit, stand, bend, reach, and walk for long periods of time in an office setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull over 20 lbs. as part of the role.
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
