Description

We are looking for an Occupational Therapist to work within their profession's Standard of Practice. The passionate OT will perform a thorough evaluation of patients assigned to him/her, establishes goals and plans of treatment to return the patient with disease, injury or disability to maximum level of function as outlined in the Rehab Department Procedures/Operational Guidelines Manual. The OT will delegate responsibilities and supervise supportive personnel, assist in administrative tasks, and participate in educational, orientation and performance improvement programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Occupational Therapy required (Master's in Occupational Therapy preferred)
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapist by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required.

Responsibilities

  • Uses current evidence, patient values, and personal experiences in making clinical decisions
  • Able to clearly articulate the role of their professional discipline in the acute care setting to patients and colleagues
  • Reviews pertinent medical records and conducts a patient interview
  • Performs a systems review to determine the need for outside referral or for therapy services
  • Selects appropriate examination components based on the initial systems screen in order to define the patient’s therapy needs
  • Synthesizes data, interprets findings, diagnoses dysfunction, determines prognosis
  • Provides patient-specific interventions within scope of practice
  • Assesses outcomes of interventions provided and adapts techniques as needed, based on a patient’s cognition, culture, communication needs, learning style and/or physical response
  • Provides a clear and concise home exercise program at initial evaluation and updates as patient progresses.
  • Provides education to the patient and/or family to deepen understanding and support the plan of care. Chooses mode of education based on patient specific variables that affect learning.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify and address barriers to home discharge in acute care
  • Advanced practice includes a combination of advanced and distinctly increased clinical and analytical skills, knowledge, clinical reasoning, attitudes and experience. This may occur within a specialty or in generalist practice.
  • Specialty skills for OT include, but are not limited to the following: splinting, taping techniques, use of specialty equipment, care of medically complex and critically ill patients
  • Writes clear and defensible documentation consistent with facility specific standards that articulates clinical decision making and skill of the therapist.
  • Documentation and overall chart management stand up to internal and external audits
  • Creates goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound, and functional
  • Justifies need for skilled care with impairments listed, pre/post treatment measurements, detailed reassessments that demonstrate medical necessity with revisions to plan of care and/or goals when appropriate
  • Conveys appropriate prioritization of elements of the patient’s plan of care
  • Completes discharge summaries at time of discharge following department guidelines and includes recommendations to address patient discharge needs, including additional rehab services and equipment.
  • Models professionalism, safety, collaboration, effective communication, leadership, evidence-based practice, positivity, and acts to promote the student as a colleague to others.
