Summer Camp - Teen Ceramics, Jewelry & Woodworking Instructors

This announcement is specific to the Teen Art Camp. If interested in other camp program areas, you must apply directly to those positions. 

The Department of Park & Recreation (DPR) Teen Art Camp is seeking Ceramics, Jewelry & Woodworking Instructors for temporary summer employment to support camp programs by planning and leading a variety of art experiences for teens ages 12-16.

Staff must commit to working from June 30 - August 8 (core camp dates). Training will begin in mid to late May through June, which includes online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. Several positions are available, and hours vary.

Responsibilities

Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR II: $24.93/Hourly 
Provides specialized instruction in one or more field, including Ceramics, Jewelry or Woodworking for students ages 12-16. Provides technical support and general maintenance in the studio. Performs supervisory and administrative duties, including assisting the director of a summer program & developing a curriculum and lesson plans.

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR III$28.81/Hourly 
Provides specialized instruction in one or more field, including ceramics, jewelry or woodworking for students ages 12-16. Provides technical support and general maintenance in the studio. Performs supervisory and administrative duties, including directing a summer program & developing a curriculum and lesson plans.

Qualifications

Minimums:

Recreation Instructor II: 

  • High school/GED: plus 
  • 800 hours of technical art experience (includes any work, volunteer, or formal art participation). Must have 50 hours as an instructor.

Recreation Instructor III:

  • High school/GED; plus 
  • 1,200 hours of technical art experience (includes any work, volunteer, or formal art participation). Must have 50 hours as an instructor.

Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not substitute the instructing hours.

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, and reliable transportation, including the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:   

  • Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps; Teaching art and working with teens; Experience/willingness to work with individuals with disabilities; and for Ceramics Instructors: Wheel throwing, hand building, kiln management, and glaze application experience.
  • For Jewelry Instructors: Experience teaching jewelry studio safety and fundamental skills, use of jewelry tools and equipment such as soldering, metal forming, stone setting, enameling, investing and casting. Must be comfortable with using smith torches, a flexshaft, and traditional hand tools.
  • For Woodworking Instructors: Experience teaching woodshop safety and fundamental skills, use of woodshop machinery & tools such as table saw, jointer, planer, lathe, radial arm and chop saws, router, bandsaw, etc.

Special Requirements

If selected, all summer staff may be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check (if 18 years of age or over).
  • Provide references, which may be included in this application.
  • Attend all required trainings, wear a uniform, and ability to lift up to 25 lbs. 
  • Stand and walk for a prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Possess a driver's license and complete a successful driving license record check (if 18 years of age or over).
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.  
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for designated positions.

Additional Information

Work Hours: May vary between 20-30 hours per week, 5-8 hours a day between the hours of 8am-5pm.
