Summer Camp Head Counselor - Northern Virginia

Come outside and play! Virginia Outside offers outdoor adventures for kids ages six to 15 and we're looking for Summer Camp Head Counselors to help kids learn and have fun! Do you love to hike, mountain bike, fish, camp and kayak? Then we're for you! Lead a group of 12 kids to find their outdoor passion and learn skills to enjoy it for life! Stay in shape while you work. Practice your favorite exercise like fishing, biking and hiking while teaching kids to appreciate the outdoors. You will share your expertise with campers by preparing equipment and supplies for the week’s camp program, driving campers in the camp van daily and spend the day at the most beautiful lakes, trails and parks in Virginia! Locations: positions are open in Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria and Falls Church!

Duties and Skills:

• Enjoy physical fitness! (e.g. standing for long periods of time, lifting/carrying gear like kayaks, hiking/walking/biking riding over challenging uneven surfaces and working in all types of weather conditions - high heat and rain.)
• Communicate with parents throughout the week and take photos of their kids having fun!
• Set a positive example to kids and parents by addressing accidents and injuries in a calm, competent manner, and completing an incident report.
• Help train staff on outdoor skills and safety and encourage younger Counselors and Counselors and Counselors in Training (CIT) in their leadership, participation and growth.
• Exercise your independent decision making, clear communication skills, good group management, and risk management skills while demonstrating a love for the outdoors!
• Enjoy helping kids develop friendships and social skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with school aged children.
• Experience in any of the following areas: fishing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking/canoeing, outdoor/survival skills, earth science, ecology, ropes courses.
• Experience driving a van and/or trailer.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
• Pass a criminal background check.
• Attend all mandatory staff development and training.
• Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
• Has current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain prior to start of work.
• Provide at least 2 references.
